Kitchen Pendant Lights: The Complete Guide to Getting It Right
You’ve designed the perfect kitchen. The cabinetry looks stunning, the worktops are exactly what you imagined, and the island has become the heart of the room.
Then comes the question that catches almost everyone out:
“How many pendant lights do I need?”
It’s one of the most common questions we hear at BCK Interiors, and for good reason. Get your pendant lighting right, and your kitchen feels balanced, stylish and welcoming. Get it wrong, and suddenly something feels a bit... off.
The good news? It’s not as complicated as it might seem.
Why Pendant Lights Matter
Pendant lights do far more than simply brighten up your kitchen.
They help define spaces, particularly in open-plan homes. They create an atmosphere in the evening, add personality to your design, and often become standout features in the room.
Think of them as the jewellery of the kitchen. You wouldn’t spend months choosing a beautiful outfit and then ignore the accessories.
How Many Pendant Lights Do You Need?
The answer depends largely on the size of your island.
As a general guide:
Small Islands (up to 1.8m)
One statement pendant can work beautifully.
Alternatively, two smaller pendants create symmetry without overwhelming the space.
Medium Islands (1.8m to 2.5m)
Two pendants are usually the sweet spot.
This creates an even spread of light and feels visually balanced from every angle.
Large Islands (2.5m+)
Three pendants often work best.
In particularly long islands, you may even consider four smaller pendants or a linear lighting feature.
Our advice? Don’t automatically assume more is better. Oversized fittings can often make a bigger impact than lots of smaller ones.
How Far Apart Should Pendant Lights Be?
This is where many people start reaching for the measuring tape.
A simple rule is to leave around 60-75cm between the centres of each pendant. This helps create an even distribution without making the lights feel cramped together.
The exact spacing will depend on the size of the fittings themselves, but the goal is always the same:
You want the pendants to feel connected, not like they’re awkwardly queuing for a bus.
How High Should Pendant Lights Hang?
Another question we get asked all the time.
Most kitchen designers recommend hanging pendants approximately 70-90cm above the worktop. This gives enough light for tasks while ensuring nobody is staring directly into a bulb while chatting across the island.
Hang them too low, and they become an obstacle.
Hang them too high, and they lose much of their impact.
If your ceilings are particularly high, you have a little more flexibility, but keeping the pendants visually connected to the island is usually the key.
Choosing the Right Style
Not every kitchen suits the same type of pendant.
Glass Pendants
Perfect for creating a light, airy feel.
Because they’re transparent, they don’t visually dominate the space, making them ideal for smaller kitchens or rooms where you want to maintain an open feel.
Metal Pendants
Great for adding contrast and character.
Black, brass, and bronze finishes remain popular choices and can help tie together other details in the room.
Statement Pendants
If your island is the focal point of the kitchen, don’t be afraid to make a statement.
A pair of oversized pendants can transform a simple island into something truly special.
Cluster or Linear Pendants
For larger islands, multi-pendant designs can provide both practical lighting and a strong design feature.
Don’t Forget About Layers of Light
Pendant lights shouldn’t be expected to do all the heavy lifting.
The best kitchen lighting schemes combine several different light sources:
General ceiling lighting
Task lighting for food preparation
Under-cabinet lighting
Feature lighting
Pendant lighting
This creates flexibility throughout the day and helps your kitchen feel just as inviting at 9pm as it does at 9am.
Common Pendant Lighting Mistakes
Going Too Small
Tiny pendants above a large island can disappear visually.
When in doubt, most people actually need to go slightly larger than they initially feel comfortable with.
Ignoring Scale
The size of the room matters just as much as the size of the island.
A large open-plan kitchen can often carry much more substantial lighting than expected.
Prioritising Looks Over Light
Beautiful pendants are great.
Beautiful pendants that actually illuminate the island are even better.
Always consider how the fitting performs as well as how it looks.
Forgetting Dimmers
Few upgrades make a bigger difference.
Bright light for cooking. Soft light for entertaining. The same pendants can do both with a simple dimmer switch.

We consider it from the very beginning because lighting has a huge influence on how a space looks, feels and functions.
The right pendants should complement your cabinetry, enhance your island and help create a kitchen you’ll love spending time in, whether you’re cooking Sunday lunch or enjoying a glass of wine after a long day.
