The Kitchen Island, Three Ways
For many homeowners, a kitchen island sits somewhere near the top of the wish list.
A well-designed island can completely change how you use your kitchen. It can give you more preparation space, additional storage, somewhere to sit and, depending on your layout, a place for your sink, hob or appliances.
But there is one important point we often make when designing a kitchen: you do not necessarily need a huge room to achieve the island-style layout you have in mind.
Here are three ways to approach it.
1. The statement kitchen island
Let's start with the dream scenario: a generous, freestanding island positioned front and centre.
In a larger kitchen, an island can become the focal point around which the rest of the room is designed. It creates a natural divide between the working and social areas of the kitchen while still keeping everything connected.
The beauty of a full-size island is just how much it can do.
Deep drawers and cupboards can provide valuable storage. A sink or hob can be incorporated to create a practical working zone, while seating on the opposite side gives family and friends somewhere to gather without getting under your feet while you cook.
With enough space, you can combine several functions. Your island might include preparation space, a sink, dishwasher, bins, storage and seating, all within one central feature.
The key is getting the proportions and positioning right. Bigger is not automatically better. You still need comfortable walkways around the island and enough room to open drawers, cupboards and appliances without creating pinch points.
2. The island that meets the wall
What if you love the idea of an island, but your kitchen is not quite wide enough to accommodate one in the middle of the room?
This is where a peninsula can be a brilliant alternative.
Rather than being completely freestanding, the cabinetry extends from or meets a wall. Visually, it can deliver much of the same effect as an island, but without requiring circulation space on all four sides.
It is particularly useful in smaller or narrower kitchens where a traditional island could make the room feel cramped.
A peninsula can still provide additional worktop space and storage, and depending on its size, it can accommodate seating, appliances or even a sink. It can also help define the kitchen area within an open-plan room.
Done well, it does not have to feel like a compromise. In the right space, connecting the island to a wall can actually create a more practical layout than squeezing in a freestanding design simply for the sake of having one.
3. No room for an island? Create a breakfast bar
Sometimes, the available space simply does not suit an island or peninsula, and that is absolutely fine.
Trying to force an island into a kitchen that is too small can reduce usable floor space and make everyday movement more difficult. Instead, consider taking one of the most desirable elements of an island, informal seating, and creating a breakfast bar.
A breakfast bar can be incorporated into a run of cabinetry or created with an extended or overhanging worktop. It gives you somewhere to enjoy breakfast, have a coffee, work on a laptop or sit and chat while someone else cooks.
It can also require considerably less floor space than an island.
With careful planning, you can still create that sociable, contemporary feel associated with an island kitchen, without compromising the practicality of the room.
Which kitchen island layout is right for you?
The best island is not necessarily the biggest one. It is the one that makes your kitchen work better.
For some homes, that means a large statement island packed with storage, appliances and seating. For others, a peninsula provides the perfect balance between additional workspace and comfortable circulation. And when space is tighter, a well-positioned breakfast bar can provide many of the lifestyle benefits without overwhelming the room.
